Quartzite has a deserved reputation as one of the toughest natural surfaces you can put in a kitchen. It begins as sandstone and is transformed under heat and pressure into an interlocking quartz structure that is genuinely hard — harder than marble and harder than a knife blade, so everyday use will not scratch it. Just as importantly, it is chemically inert to kitchen acids, so unlike marble it does not etch when wine, citrus, or vinegar meet the surface.

Heat is where people most often ask. Quartzite is far more heat-tolerant than an engineered quartz (which contains resin and can scorch), and a hot pan will not melt or mark true quartzite. Even so, we recommend trivets as a habit — not because the stone will burn, but because repeated thermal shock is simply good to avoid on any natural surface, and because some slabs are resin-treated at the factory in ways that prefer not to be tested with a 500-degree pan.

Two honest caveats keep expectations right. First, "quartzite" is sometimes used loosely in the trade for softer stones that are really dolomitic marbles; a reputable yard will tell you exactly what a slab is, because the durability depends on it. Second, even hard quartzite still wants sealing against staining, since hardness and porosity are different properties.

Everything we sell as quartzite, we can speak to honestly — its hardness, its translucency, and how it will behave in your specific kitchen. Come test a slab in person if durability is your deciding factor.
