2cm Roman Italian Travertine slab, vein cut, filled and honed, 63 by 123 inches, lifted by overhead crane at Royal Stone Los Angeles

The lot at a glance: 2cm Roman Italian Travertine, quarried at Tivoli east of Rome, vein cut along the bedding plane so the long horizontal striations run the length of the slab. Voids closed with a colour-matched epoxy fill, then honed to a soft matte that reads warm in daylight and quiet under interior light. Slab format runs 63″ × 123″, sized for the working blocks at the quarry rather than for jumbo cladding panels.

Vein cut is the cut to ask for when the room wants line. The slab reads as horizontal bands of cream, ivory and warm sand — closer to the architecture of the Colosseum and Bernini's St. Peter's colonnade than to the cloudy, cross-cut travertine of mid-century modernist work. Honed and filled, the surface stays calm enough for kitchens and baths, but the line work gives a vanity field or a fireplace surround the architectural weight that a flatter marble can struggle to hold.

Where it lands in a project: vertical book-matched fireplace surrounds where the striations run floor to mantel; bath surrounds and shower walls where horizontal banding pulls the eye across the room; vanity tops where the line work animates a long counter without the busy figure of a marble; entry wainscot and powder rooms where one strong cut needs to carry the whole space. The honed and filled finish keeps it workable for interior daily use; if the same field is wanted unfilled and brushed for an exterior pool surround or a courtyard wall, that can be specified through the same Tivoli supply.

The lot is on the floor now at the West Los Angeles yard, 2303 South Sepulveda. Designers and homeowners are welcome to walk the bundle in daylight by appointment. Bring the cabinetry samples and the finish board and we will mark slabs against the elevation while you are there.
