Patagonia Tourmaline Unique IYA343 — Leathered, Backlit

Lot IYA343

The Unique grade.

Quarried in Brazil. Curated through the Antolini Unique selection in Verona — reserved for the most pictorial one-of-one blocks coming out of the cave.

Patagonia Tourmaline Unique is the most dramatic cut in the Patagonia family. Wide passages of charcoal and near-black tourmaline streaks run diagonally across a warm peach and gold crystalline ground, with pockets of pale grey quartz and apricot crystal breaking up the field. The Tourmaline name refers to the dark mineral inclusions; the Unique grade is Antolini’s call-out for the most pictorial, one-of-one blocks.

This particular block — Lot IYA343, 2cm, 75″ × 125″ — reads as a literal landscape: rock face, sand, shadow. The tourmaline bands form the geology; the peach and gold passages are the sunlight on it.

Finishes matter more than on the calmer Patagonias. Polished reflects the field as if under glass; leathered grounds the dark inclusions and reads more contemporary; and on this lot, backlighting the translucent cristallo passages turns the slab into a glowing landscape. We’ll pull the slab and light it for you in the yard before you commit.

One Slab · Three Finishes

Polished, leathered,
and backlit.

Same lot, three ways to read it. The finish changes how the peach and gold grounds respond to light and how the dark tourmaline streaks hold their weight — and changes which application the slab belongs on.

All three photos were taken in Los Angeles, in front of the same slab, on the same day. No compositing.

2cm · 75" × 125" · Polished

Polished

Mirror-grade reflectivity. The dark tourmaline streaks hold as deep ink; the peach and gold passages read as wet resin. Polished is the right call at bar fronts, formal vanities, and any place the slab is meant to read as a single luminous object.

Leathered

Brushed matte that absorbs light and grounds the dark inclusions. Hides fingerprints and water marks — the more contemporary read, and the right call for kitchen islands, dining tables, and bar tops that get touched daily.

Backlit Leathered

The translucent cristallo passages of the slab glow peach and gold when lit from behind; the dark tourmaline streaks stay in silhouette. The leathered surface keeps the light soft and grounded rather than reflective — the installation we spec for almost every feature wall and bar back.

Backlighting

The translucent
cristallo passages.

Tourmaline Patagonia runs partly translucent. The peach and gold passages of the slab are recrystallized silica — they transmit light. The dark tourmaline inclusions are opaque — they hold as silhouette when the slab is lit from behind.

This is the lot to backlight. The translucent ground glows citrine; the dark bands stay hard black; the result reads as a lit landscape rather than a lit slab.

Lighting note

Warm light reads as citrine; cool light reads as bone — pick the fixture first, then the slab

Patagonia Tourmaline Unique IYA343 — Leathered, backlit in daylight at the yard.

Lighting design is the variable that actually matters on this lot. Graze the wall from the side with a warm fixture and the relief and field read sculptural. Backlight a translucent Patagonia and the amber and ivory passages glow through the surface while the dark inclusions hold as silhouette.

We carry a backlit panel in the showroom for walk-throughs. Bring the lighting designer.

Common Questions

Patagonia Tourmaline
questions, answered.

What is Patagonia Tourmaline Unique?
Patagonia Tourmaline Unique is the most dramatic cut in the Antolini Patagonia selection. The Tourmaline name refers to the dark mineral inclusions — black, near-black, sometimes with bronze veining — that run as horizontal bands through a warm peach and gold crystalline ground. The Unique grade is Antolini’s call-out for the most pictorial, one-of-one blocks coming out of the cave. Lot IYA343 is one such block.
Is Lot IYA343 available in both polished and leathered?
Yes. This lot is currently stocked in both finishes. Polished reads as a luminous, mirror-grade surface — dark inclusions hold as deep ink, peach and gold passages reflect like wet resin. Leathered is brushed matte: it absorbs light, grounds the dark inclusions, and reads as the more contemporary finish. Either finish can be backlit.
Can Patagonia Tourmaline be backlit?
Yes. The translucent cristallo passages of the slab transmit light; the dark tourmaline inclusions are opaque and hold as silhouette. Lit from behind with a warm fixture, the slab reads as a lit landscape — citrine ground, hard black bands. We carry a backlit panel in the showroom for walk-throughs. Bring the lighting designer.
Where can Patagonia Tourmaline be used?
Almost everywhere a feature slab earns its place: bar fronts, bar backs, bathroom feature walls, fireplace surrounds, lit pedestals, dining tables, and (leathered only) kitchen islands. We do not recommend polished Tourmaline for working counters — the polished surface reveals fingerprints and water marks. Leathered fares considerably better on a working surface.
How is Patagonia Tourmaline different from Patagonia Hard Rock?
Hard Rock is an Antolini Textures finish — a deep, sculpted mechanical relief cut into the slab face — applied to the Patagonia Original or similar base stones. Patagonia Tourmaline Unique is a base stone: a one-of-one block selected from the cave for pictorial movement, finished in polished or leathered (or Hard Rock, by special order).
